A Shopify product-data checklist for AI shopping discovery.

A shopper rarely asks only for a product name. They ask whether something fits, what it is made of, and whether they can actually buy it. Your product information should be able to answer those questions clearly.

01 / THE OBSERVED GAP

One question can expose several missing facts.

In a consumer Muse session we examined, a shopper asked for a side table no more than 18 inches wide, suitable for a small apartment, with a clearly stated material. Muse surfaced a C-shaped table listed at 17.72 inches wide. The width was useful; the rest of the buying decision was less certain.

A width limit was stated, but the shopper’s specific sofa clearance was not verified.

The exact wood type, metal, and finish were not identified in the catalog information cited.

02 / THE FIVE CHECKS

Before testing an AI answer, make the source worth checking.

Start with your highest-priority products. For each one, compare what the shopper needs with what a person can verify on the live product page.

01

Verify the fact before writing it.

Keep a source for dimensions, materials, compatibility, care instructions, and other claims. Mark anything you cannot confirm as unknown instead of filling the gap with plausible copy.

02

State measurable details plainly.

Use exact dimensions and units. Name the material and finish when verified. “Compact” and “premium” may sound appealing, but they cannot resolve a strict width or material requirement.

03

Keep variants and availability aligned.

Check that the selected size or color, its price, and its stock status describe the same item. Update the storefront and any catalog feeds used for the relevant channel.

04

Answer the purchase questions.

Make shipping destinations, delivery expectations, and returns easy to find for the target market. If the information varies by region, say so on the page rather than implying one answer fits every shopper.

05

Use Shopify fields, then surface the facts.

Product and category metafields can hold details such as dimensions or materials. Check that the relevant facts also appear where shoppers can read them in your storefront. A filled field alone does not prove an AI assistant can access it.

03 / A REPEATABLE METHOD

Test the question. Fix the source. Ask again.

Choose a small set of products and realistic buyer questions. Record the platform, date, region, exact prompt, answer, and cited source. Fix only merchant-verified information, then repeat the same test conditions. Separate three outcomes: the source was updated, the answer changed, and the recommendation changed. They are not the same result.

01Capture a baseline
02Publish verified facts
03Retest and document

For Google shopping surfaces, Product structured data and Merchant Center feeds can help Google interpret price, availability, and other product details. Shopify also describes how product and category metafields organize product information. Each AI platform may use different sources and methods.

04 / WHAT THIS CAN PROVE

Better information is measurable. Placement is not guaranteed.

A product-information review can show which facts were missing, where they were published, and whether a later test could verify them. It cannot guarantee that an AI service will crawl the update, cite the product, recommend it, or send a sale. That distinction keeps the work useful even when an answer does not change immediately.

Google’s AI Search guidance emphasizes useful original content and sound SEO foundations. We apply the same principle to product information: make the facts genuinely useful to the buyer first.
